Job Description
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Power Scholars Academy Site Director, the Assistant Teacher is responsible for supporting the daily enrichment instruction and safety of the children in the program. They will also serve as a role model by exemplifying high standards and values.
They are responsible for managing these functions in accordance with the stated mission, goals, and policies established by the administrative staff, governing committees, and Board of Directors of the YMCA.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Interpret, communicate, and promote Y mission, goals, and objectives.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with children and staff.
- Promote, foster and support the Y’s commitment to access, inclusion and engagement for all by engaging diverse populations in a welcoming environment.
- Interact and build relationships with children on an on-going basis during program times, exercising sensitivity to the needs of each child.
- Help identify camper needs and support the instructional plans.
- Responsible for safety and well-being of all children in the program.
- May communicate with parents of participants and potential participants.
- May assist with planning and preparing daily enrichment activities, in accordance with assigned program.
- Assist with program implementation.
- Communicate with the Site Director and/or Teacher concerning daily activities and the status of the children in the program.
- Maintains an open line of communication.
- May provide discipline, direction and motivation in accordance with YMCA discipline policy.
- Provides direction and motivation for children in the program.
- Responsible for maintaining accurate records for each child.
- Responsible for being prepared and proactive in all aspects of the program.
- May aid in the development and/or improvement of program curricula.
- May assist in collecting student progress data.
- Attends all staff meetings and trainings as required.
- Performs other duties and responsibilities as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Experience working with children.
- Must have a strong background in group control, leading activities, planning and organizing.
- Must have knowledge of how Y programs run.
- Ability to work with and motivate parents, staff, and children.
- Must be sensitive and mature and able to provide leadership for counselor staff.
- Must be able to obtain Basic Life Support/First Aid, Emergency Oxygen and Epi-Pen certifications upon hire. Other certifications and trainings may be required upon hire.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Multi-lingual desired but not required.

- Ability to plan, lead, and participate in a range of activities in a variety of outdoor/indoor settings.
- Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range, or special accommodations made of sufficient nature for completion of assigned tasks.
- Ability to communicate clearly through speech and understanding of the English language.
- Ability to walk, run, stand, kneel, stoop, and manual dexterity.
- Ability to lift a maximum of 40 pounds.
- Compliance with all COVID related PPE, cleaning, reporting and prevention expectations efforts. Further training and detail will be provided upon question and/or hire.
