Youth Protection & Abuse Prevention

The safety and well-being of children and teens in our care is, and always will be, our top priority. We are committed to creating safe environments where young people can learn, grow and thrive and to continuously strengthening our practices that protect children from abuse.

Accreditation Journey

The YMCA of the Triangle, including all 19 branches and three overnight camps, has begun the process of earning Praesidium Accreditation, a rigorous, nationally recognized standard for preventing sexual abuse in organizations that serve children and vulnerable adults.

Through this accreditation process, the Y is strengthening policies, training and practices to further reduce risk and reinforce a culture of safety across all programs. This work reflects our ongoing commitment to providing safe, trusted environments where children and families can thrive.

The Process

Our Y is currently in Phase One, having completed the self-assessment and preparing for a Summer 2026 site visit.

Prevention Policies & Procedures

Our full and part-time staff and volunteers are held to clear, consistent standards designed to protect children and uphold a culture of safety across the Y.

Screening & Hiring: New staff/volunteers undergo interviews, reference checks and criminal/sex offender background checks, which are repeated periodically.

Mandatory Training: Annual training is required for all staff and high-access volunteers on recognizing, preventing and reporting abuse.

Code of Conduct (The "Rule of Three"): Staff may not be alone with a single child where they cannot be observed by others.

Physical/Digital Boundaries: Prohibits inappropriate touch (e.g., hugging, lap sitting), physical punishment, and private communication (texting, social media) with minors.

Reporting Requirements: Staff are mandated to report any suspicion of child abuse or policy violations to supervisors and appropriate authorities immediately.

Prohibited Behavior: Staff are forbidden from having contact with youth participants outside of Y-sanctioned programs.

Red Flag Reporting

The YMCA of the Triangle utilizes Red Flag Reporting as its confidential reporting system. If you see or suspect abuse within a YMCA program, or you see or hear about something that doesn't feel right, you are encouraged to report your concern immediately. Reports can be made anonymously, 24/7, and help ensure the safety of everyone in our care.
