Vice President of Finance

Job Description


POSITION SUMMARY:
 

Under the direction of the Chief Financial Officer, the Vice President of Finance provides strategic and operational leadership for the Association’s financial management functions, including accounting, financial reporting, payroll, procurement, and internal controls. This role serves as a key advisor to senior leadership on financial, tax, and business planning matters and ensures the integrity, accuracy, and compliance of all financial operations. The Vice President of Finance oversees the day-to-day management of financial activities, leads a high performing team across multiple finance disciplines, and drives continuous improvement in systems, processes, and financial stewardship to support the long-term sustainability and mission of the YMCA of the Triangle. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 


Strategic Financial Leadership
 

  • Contributes to the development of Association-wide strategic goals and provides financial leadership that supports long-term organizational success. 
  • Advises senior leadership on financial, tax, and business planning matters, offering proactive insights and strategic recommendations. 
  • Maintains continuous communication with the CFO and Executive Team, ensuring timely awareness of critical financial issues and emerging risks. 


Department Oversight & Team Leadership
 

  • Oversees, directs, and develops the Accounting, FP&A, Payroll, and Procurement teams to ensure high performance and operational excellence. 
  • Recruits, hires, trains, supervises, evaluates, and coaches staff to build a strong, collaborative, and mission-driven finance team. 
  • Promotes a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, customer service, and professional growth across all finance functions. 


Financial Operations & Compliance
 

  • Leads the month-end close process and oversees the production of accurate, timely financial statements. 
  • Directs the annual audit, single audit, Form 990, and Y-USA Annual Financial Report processes, ensuring compliance and high-quality submissions. 
  • Ensures compliance with grant requirements, including federal, state, and local awards. 
  • Maintains accounting records in accordance with GAAP and oversees all tax matters, including nonprofit status, payroll taxes, sales taxes, and property taxes. 
  • Oversees and strengthens financial policies, internal controls, accounting standards, and procedures. 


Procurement & Financial Systems Leadership
 

  • Leads and advances the procurement function to align purchasing practices with organizational strategy, cost stewardship, and operational efficiency. 
  • Assists in or leads the implementation, improvement, and upgrade of financial systems to enhance accuracy, efficiency, and user experience. 
  • Cultivates strong working relationships with Treasury, Data, and Information Systems teams to ensure integrated and effective financial operations. 


Cross-Functional Collaboration & Organizational Support
 

  • Builds strong partnerships with peers across Financial Services and the broader organization to support shared goals and operational alignment. 
  • Provides financial expertise and leadership on cross-departmental initiatives and special projects assigned by the CFO. 
  • Ensures financial practices and decision-making support for the YMCA’s mission, values, and long-term sustainability. 


QUALIFICATIONS:
 

  • Advanced degree required, and minimum of 10 years progressive leadership and organizational experience. 
  • Certified Public Accountant with active license preferred. 
  • Auditing experience preferred. 
  • Experience with NetSuite or other cloud based financial reporting tools a plus. 
  • Experience with Federal Grants and Single Audit requirements a plus. 
  • Demonstrated commitment to building community and fostering meaningful relationships through mission-driven work and cross-department collaboration. 
  • Experience supporting organizational initiatives and staff development within a team-based, service-oriented environment.  
  • Ability to coordinate projects, workflows, and schedules effectively in a dynamic setting. 
  • Strong communication skills, including written, verbal, and public-facing interactions. 
  • Demonstrates initiative, sound judgment, and strong organizational and time-management skills. 
  • Builds inclusive, mission-driven relationships with youth, families, and community members from diverse backgrounds. 
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills preferred, but not required.

  • The employee frequently is required to sit and reach and must be able to move around the work environment.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust. 
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually minimal to moderate. 
  • Travel, including evening, weekend, and overnight, will be necessary.  
  • Must be able to provide valid identification for employment eligibility verification.  
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have access to reliable transportation.  
  • A clean driving record is required to meet YMCA insurance standards.  
  • Travel between branch locations or to off-site meetings and events is required.
