Red, blue, yellow, green and purple take on a whole new meaning at YMCA Summer Day Camp. In the form of colored beads, these five colors reinforce good character.
Our campers get excited to receive a blank necklace on the first day of YMCA Summer Day Camp. And every day, they can earn beads in the five colors, each representing a different character trait.
Bead necklaces are a favorite tradition at camp and a creative way to reinforce good behavior in kids. Different YMCA camps use different beads, but the intent is the same - to reinforce positive behavior, character traits or a special achievement!
THE FIVE BASIC BEADS
- Red: Caring
- Blue: Honesty
- Yellow: Respect
- Green: Responsibility
- Purple: Faith
Campers may receive beads for attending Family Nights, knowing the Thought for the Day or being a good friend.
Parent tip: Be sure to ask your camper about their beads and how they earned them. Campers may also come home with ribbons or stickers when they are caught being good.
“I love that the core values are recognized by the counselors through the giving of beads. My children show me the beads they earned each day and tell me what they did to earn them.” – Shelley, YMCA Parent
