In honor of longtime YMCA leaders Wyatt and Lil Taylor, the Cary Family YMCA has been renamed the Taylor Family YMCA.
For 25 years, families, adults and children have called the Cary Y their second home. Looking forward, we’re excited for members to call the Taylor Family Y their go-to place for fitness and wellness.
SAME COMMITMENT TO SERVICE
While the name is changing, our great programs, friendly staff, and commitment to service and building relationships will remain the same. In the coming days and months, you’ll notice changes to our signs, website, and Facebook and Twitter accounts to reflect the Taylor family name.
The new name will honor both the Taylor Family and the Cary Family YMCA’s commitment to healthy living, youth development and social responsibility. In August 2016, YMCA of the Triangle Board members voted unanimously on the name change.
HEART OF THE COMMUNITY
“The YMCA has always been at the heart of the Cary community,” said YMCA of the Triangle CEO Doug McMillan. “This is an exciting time for YMCA service in Western Wake County with the renaming of the Cary Family YMCA and the opening of the Northwest Cary YMCA in 2017. We are confident the renaming will provide clarity about locations and programming in the broader Cary community.”
ABOUT THE TAYLOR FAMILY
Wyatt Taylor, the General Secretary of the Raleigh YMCA, was a visionary leader who, with key volunteers, saw an opportunity for a unique camp on the Neuse River. In 1948, Camp Sea Gull for boys became a reality. Recognizing a need for an all-girls camp with a similar capacity, the YMCA opened Camp Seafarer for girls in 1961 with Lil Taylor as Director. As CEO of the YMCA in Raleigh, Wyatt focused on youth development and the power of small group work. The Taylor’s emphasis on excellent program quality and building relationships paved the way for expanded YMCA services throughout the Triangle. Today, our YMCA is guided by the ideals championed by Wyatt and Lil.
