Celebrate Dad at the Y

Dad is #1 in our book. That's why the Y invented Father's Day in 1909 and continues to provide ways for Dads to spend time with their families.

FATHERS TODAY

At the Y we hope to provide opportunities for fathers and children to connect. James Vann is just one of our volunteers who makes that happen.

"James is one of the most selfless and considerate dads that I have seen," said Andrew Crook, associate director of Y Guides. "No matter the situation, his positive attitude serves as a model not only for me, but for all our families that have been impacted through our program."

James joined the Alexander Family YMCA in 1990. As James increased his physical activity inside the Y, he also increased his volunteering. As soon as he could, James got his children involved with the Y Guides program. His daughter Sarah joined Y Guides in 2010 when she was six years old and his son Walker joined the program two years later.

Today, James serves as the Arapahoe Nations Chief for the Y Guides. Sarah and Walker help with events including Spring Outings. "It's strengthened our faith and family bond as we focus on an attitude of gratitude," said James.

"I am proud of my Dad helping others," said Walker. "I like talking to the other Y Guides and handing out patches."

"Y Guides gives a unique opportunity for fathers to create amazing memories by getting away from the busyness of life to fish, play and spend quality time together," said James' wife Laura. "It's sweet to see dads slow down to enjoy their kids as well as time with other fathers."
