On December 9, the Advisory Board of the Southeast Raleigh YMCA and other YMCA leaders gathered to celebrate the naming of the Dr. Dudley E. Flood Flood Kid Zone. This recognition honors the legendary North Carolina educator who championed educational equity for all children.
Flood was a Pitt County teacher and principal before working at the NC Department of Public Instruction. In the years following the Brown v. Board of Education decision mandating school desegregation in the United States, Dr. Flood traveled across the state to unite divided communities and work toward integrating public schools.
Longtime YMCA volunteers Mary Mac and Tom Bradshaw made the gift in Flood's honor. The Kid Zone is the YMCA's drop-in child care.
