Flood Group Image Award

Engagement and collaboration are the hallmarks of our YMCA. On February 13, one of our leaders was honored for living into those attributes.

As part of The Flood Group Image Awards,  Dexter Hebert, Executive Branch Director of the Southeast Raleigh YMCA, was presented the first Vernon Malone Leadership Award for his work supporting education equity and youth development in Southeast Raleigh. Vernon Malone was a longtime teacher, administrator county commissioner and local legislator in Wake County who dedicated his life to improving education for all students.

"Dexter's work in Southeast Raleigh has been quiet, dignified and so expansive - like Vernon's," said Dr. Dudley Flood, cofounder of The Flood Group. "We wanted the Vernon Malone Leadership Award to be presented to someone who extends themself beyond their job. Dexter is the epitome of that criteria. It is fitting that Dexter be the first."

Commitment to Community

Dexter's YMCA career began at a youth program center in Apex. He later led community-supported programs at the Alexander Family YMCA. Today, he leads the Southeast Raleigh YMCA which offers traditional Y programs and provides broad services to the community based on the Purpose Built Communities model.

Dexter’s staff at the Southeast Raleigh Y describe him as a passionate and dedicated advocate for the community, consistently leading by example and pushing others to reach their full potential.

“This award is a strong endorsement of Dexter’s work at the YMCA, his years of leadership serving on the Raleigh Parks and Recreation, DHIC and RISE Southeast Raleigh Charter School boards and his collaboration with local churches,” said Jon Mills, YMCA of the Triangle Regional Vice President.
