April Fostering Connections

The last two words of the YMCA of the Triangle’s Mission statement are for all.

That commitment to inclusion took a meaningful step forward some 20 years ago with the creation of Camp G.R.A.C.E. The camp began with a simple yet powerful idea from Yo Sobha, then a Youth Director at the Finley YMCA.

Yo wanted to create an inclusive space for children with Pervasive Development Disorders that provided a YMCA summer camp experience with the educational, social and emotional support required to help provide a supportive and engaging environment.

With support from organizations like A Small Miracle, LLC, the Autism Society of North Carolina, Community Partnerships and Maxim Home Health, that idea became a reality. Thanks to their generosity and donors contributing to the YMCA’s Annual Campaign, the camp continues to thrive today.

Yo’s vision has expanded significantly over the years. Last summer alone, 147 children attended Camp G.R.A.C.E. at four YMCA locations across the Triangle. The commitment to inclusion continues to grow, with several YMCAs offering even more opportunities.

The Poole Family YMCA, for instance, has launched the No Limits Initiative, a program for teens and young adults with special needs. Each month, the Poole Y opens its doors for fun, inclusive group activities where participants can build relationships and engage in meaningful experiences.

The impact of these programs is felt deeply by families. Just last week, a staff member shared a story about her niece, who has Down syndrome. Initially, her mother was concerned about whether she would fit in at the Kindercamp and Camp G.R.A.C.E. at the Y. However, those worries quickly faded. The Y provided a welcoming and supportive environment where this child not only participated but truly belonged.

What started as a simple idea has blossomed into a program that has touched thousands of lives. Yo’s dream reminds us that small acts of vision and service can lead to extraordinary change.

I challenge you to ask yourself: what can we do today that will have a lasting impact on the lives of others?
