We're delighted to spotlight Trevis Averett! Trevis is very active in our group exercise classes (by land & sea) and is also a graduate of LIVESTRONG at the YMCA.
We recently asked him to share his Y story.
Tell us about your Y community:
I enjoy the challenges and fellowship of the Y’s aerobics and strength classes. Included, but not limited to, are: cardio sculpt, boot camp, cycling, yoga, Pilates or other core classes, and water aerobics.
What impact has the Y had on you or your family?
At the Y, I’ve found that its staff and members have demonstrated to me a genuine effort to live up to the Y Mission. In particular, after being diagnosed with cancer in 2017, I was delighted to find out that I could attend other Ys with my membership. In 2018, while receiving proton radiation therapy at the Hampton University Proton Therapy Institute in Hampton, VA, I was able, over two and one-half months, to attend regular aerobics and strength classes at the Victory Y in Yorktown. When I returned to Sanford, I was invited to attend the 12-week LIVESTRONG course. Participation in this course helped me at a time when radiation, but mainly medicines, had made exercising more of a challenge. At both Ys, staff and members treated me with the utmost kindness and included me on prayer lists for which I am forever grateful.
Why would you encourage others to join the Y?
While my family is grown, the Y has the most family-oriented facilities and programs anywhere!
We appreciate Trevis sharing his Y story and are grateful that he's a part of the Ingram Y family!
