Keep Cool and Fit

Don't let Mother Nature interfere with your wellness routine this summer. Our YMCA Wellness Instructors share five, simple tips to keep you cool and on track for a healthy lifestyle all summer long.

1. BE PREPARED

  • Check the forecast for UV index and ozone concentration. Avoid spending time aside when the levels are high.
  • Keep a summer bag in your car that’s loaded with sunscreen, lip balm, hats and sunglasses.
  • Layout light-colored, loose fitting clothing the night before. Lighter colors reflect the light and keep you feeling cooler.

2. GET OUTSIDE BEFORE 10 A.M. OR AFTER 5 P.M.

  • Time your workouts. You can enjoy the summer weather and keep cool by going out before 10 a.m. or after 5 p.m.
  • Stay in the shade. Go for a hike or run on a trail that’s wooded. Set up a tent for kids and let them play with toys, puzzles or board games.

3. STAY HYDRATED

Nothing beats water for staying hydrated and you will need more of it during the summer.

  • Keep a bottle of water with you during the day.
  • Freeze water bottles and juice boxes to take on the go so that they stay cold longer.
  • Look for hidden sources of water in foods like watermelon and celery.

4. GET WET

After you get water inside your body, look for ways to get into the water too.

  • Make a splash at one of our nine outdoor pools for water fitness classes, water slides and splash grounds.
  • Have fun with water by playing pool games or setting up a toy car wash.
  • Improve your swim stroke with swimming lessons at our indoor and outdoor pools.

5. MOVE INSIDE

If the temperature is too high, take your workout inside at the YMCA.

  • Try a different fitness class. With more than 300 classes to choose from, you can beat the heat and get fit.
  • Sign up for a free fitness consultation and learn a new workout routine.
  • Run or walk on one of our indoor tracks.
