One in five children is bullied. At the YMCA, we’re committed to changing the odds.
“October is National Bullying Prevention Month, but at the YMCA, we’re focused on bullying prevention on a year-round basis,” said Kim Keith, YMCA of the Triangle VP of Youth Development. “We want children to gain confidence and foster relationships.”
All youth programs at the YMCA are designed to offer fun, engaging activities that encourage character development in children.
“Children learn from parents and other adults. They look to them for advice and help with tough decisions,” said Kim. “We want to equip children, parents and our staff with the tools to make good decisions and solve problems effectively. Here are terms that we use in YMCA programs.”
BULLYING OR CONFLICT
Bullying is unwanted behavior that is intentional, often repeated and involves a power imbalance. Conflict is a disagreement in which all parties express their views. There is equal power among all sides.
BE AN UPSTANDER
We encourage all children and our staff to be Upstanders. An Upstander recognizes when something is wrong and acts to make it right.
