The heart of our Durham YMCA is our members, volunteers and staff. That being the case, we're especially excited to spotlight Shirley Jones, who has made an impact with each of those roles. We appreciate all that she does for our community and are so glad that she agreed to share more about her time with the Y.
Why the Y?
"I was first introduced to the Y as a “We Build People” (Annual Campaign) volunteer. It was exciting to support a campaign where all money raised was directly funneled back to the community and assisted those in need. While working as a volunteer, I was presented with the opportunity to work at the access desk. I happily accepted!
"My time at the YMCA has afforded me the opportunity to position myself in many roles throughout the organization. I have been a Shift Coordinator, a Wellness Coordinator, to now a Membership Engagement Specialist. Working and assisting various departments has opened my eyes to different perspectives within the Y, which has enhanced my appreciation for the hard work and service that the YMCA family exemplifies.
"Throughout my years at the YMCA, I have witnessed so many successful fitness journeys that have made me proud to work for the YMCA. From checking in members at the first desk, conducting new member orientations and being a constant encourager to all members, I am truly elated that I can make a small difference with each member that I encounter.
"As I reflect on my time at the YMCA, I am motivated by each member that walks through the door. I, too, have my own fitness journey that began at the YMCA. Because of the YMCA, I was introduced to various weight management/nutritional programs which aided in helping me lose over 100 lbs.
"As a result, I engulfed myself within the culture of the YMCA and was able to join running groups while fostering lifelong friendships within the community. These friendships have led to constant accountability partners, various book clubs, and an introduction to a new adventure as a pet/house sitter for numerous YMCA families and their fur/feathery babies.
"I am truly blessed to be a member of a community that embraces me unconditionally. So the question shouldn’t be 'Why the Y?', it should be 'Why not the Y?'"
