Staff Spotlight: Tracy Brewer

The heart of our Durham YMCA is our members, volunteers and staff. We're so excited to spotlight one of the most energetic connectors and community builders we've even met - Tracy Brewer! Tracy is one of a kind, and we're so glad to have her as part of our Durham YMCAs family.

WHY THE Y?

"I started working at the YMCA six years ago. After being a faithful student of many fitness formats at the YMCA, I found a love for Zumba. I never knew how much I would love working out and sharing my passion with others. The connections and people I meet each day and every class bring me so much joy. Even on my worst days my students inspire and lift me up to keep living life to the fullest. My students are my why along with my faith in God, my family, and my healthy lifestyle.

"I enjoy showing up for others because I remember being a student, however, I'm still a forever student. I listen to my heart, People's facial expressions, and their energy. This teaches me to adjust if they need more and to know when I need to do modifications. It's not all about me, but 100% all about the people I serve. Without my students, I have no class to inspire. I constantly express my need to see their smiling faces to my students and consider how they feel. I enjoy seeing others reaching and achieving their goals.  They are determined to never give up on themselves even when it is hard.

"Outside of the YMCA, I enjoy being a wife of 23 years to my husband Calvin Sr. I am a mother of four amazing boys. I love to spend time with my family and our cute puppy named Bear. They are my life and I'm blessed to be the queen of the "Brew Crew." I am a faithful member of my church and head of the children's ministry. I am on the young adult dance team and finance team. I love international travel, shopping, singing, fine dining and so much more. I'm currently pursuing my certification in personal training and nutrition. I lost 80 pounds in 8 months 11 years ago after joining weight watchers on April 5, 2011. I reflect on my childhood, teens, college days, and now adulthood. At 46 years of age, I still feel like a youth that was a cheerleader, and banner girl/dancer in a marching band in high school. I feel full of life and youthful. I just regained my fitness and a healthy lifestyle. After I took a leap of faith to regain a healthy lifestyle my husband and boys followed behind me. We are a team and keep each other accountable. I'm Zintastic Zumba with Tracy B and have branded my journey as T.O.T.A.L. fitness with Tracy B. (Targeting Obesity Through Active Lifestyle). This is me!"
