(Un)packing the YAG Dress Code

By Emma Smith

The Youth & Government Conference, at its core, is about displaying leadership, growing your character, learning about government, and networking with peers from all over North Carolina. However, what really defines that ever so impactful YAG weekend? The fashion. Every day of the weekend, delegates emerge from their hotel rooms bright-eyed and bushy-tailed donning uniquely stylish outfits. Whether you aim to express your personal style, make the ‘yagfits’ Instagram feed, or just feel confident– your outfit can make your weekend.

YAG, while fun, is professional. To maintain that professionalism, delegates must adhere to a “business-professional” dress code. This is done to reflect traditional workplace and courtroom expectations. Business-professional attire can make your packing experience seem a little daunting, but this guide will help make the dress code a little less overwhelming.

Business Professional

Business-professional is more conservative– no low cut necklines, cut outs, or short bottoms. Women should opt for blouses, dresses, professional pants, skirts, even a blazer can make all the difference in your outfit. Men should opt for collared shirts, pants, jackets, and even a fun tie/bowtie! During daily working sessions please avoid appearing in sweatpants, jeans, hoodies, or athletic wear (these can all be worn while in your room or on Friday Fun Night!).

Places to Shop

A good place to search for these clothing items as we count down the days to conference is stores like JCPenney and Belk or even H&M and Anthropologie. For more affordable in-person options, think of thrift stores such as Goodwill or Plato’s Closet. Bridal stores or stores carrying menswear, like local tux shops, can even prove to be a good place to scout out pieces. On the online side, stores like Amazon or Shein are great affordable options. You can even put together outfits from what you own already or even ask your parents for some pieces! While this shouldn’t limit any delegates' participation in the weekend, the dress code is an integral part of the conference and so we ask that you follow it!

Make your outfits stand out with bright colors, patterns, and silhouettes! But mostly, have fun, delegates, and make YAG your moment!
