Volunteers Break Ground

Community leaders, YMCA volunteers, donors and staff broke ground for the future Poole Family YMCA on Aversboro Road in Garner on November 1.

“We're so excited to celebrate our volunteers and their tremendous support of a YMCA in Garner,” said Bruce Murray, Poole Family YMCA branch executive director. “Just 18 months ago, we challenged the community to Grow Garner by supporting the capital campaign for the Poole Y.”

YMCA leaders set a capital campaign goal of $7 million. Volunteers raised more than $7.2 million. Site clearing started in September. The facility is expected to open in 2017. The facility will be named in recognition of Lonnie and Carol Poole and their generous support of the capital campaign to build a YMCA in Garner. The 14-acre campus will be named the Bell Family Campus in honor of the Victor Bell family and their donation of land nearly 42 years ago.

"This YMCA belongs to the community, " said Zach Ambrose, Poole Branch Advisory Board Chair. "The Poole Family YMCA will make a tremendous impact on families here in Garner.
