The YMCA and six of our branches have earned the recognition of becoming an IDD Inclusive Employer through the organization Work Together NC. To date, staff at the Finley, Kerr, Kraft, Northwest Cary, Poole, and Taylor YMCAs have completed the necessary training in partnership with Kelly Gates, the Association’s Sr. Director of Talent Acquisition. They are now better able to support individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in finding a professional or volunteer position with the Y.
Our YMCA team members completed training modules and attended community chats and quarterly meetings throughout the process. This recognition by Work Together NC provides our Y with access to following educational modules and learnings:
- Introduction to IDD Inclusion in the Workplace
- Language and Misconceptions, Mindset Shifts
- Universal Design
- Tools for People with IDD In the Workplace
- Allyship in the Workplace
- Success Stories
- Community Resources
As an IDD Inclusive Employer, the Y receives job candidate referrals and support from local agencies with appropriate training and coaching for new hires. For example, we now have established partnerships with Gigi's playhouse, a Down Syndrome Achievement Center, and NC's Division of Employment & Independence for People with Disabilities.
Additionally, hiring managers will participate in quarterly mentorship and networking calls.
The goal of Work Together NC is to help individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities find the community supports they need to transition and thrive as adults. By partnering with local companies and community organizations like the Y, WTNC is able to form an IDD Inclusive Employment Coalition.
