Teen Mental Health First Aid Training

Mental Health Has No Face

teen Mental Health First Aid

The Taylor Family and Northwest Cary YMCAs are partnering with the Poe Health Center to bring the teen Mental Health First Aid (tMHFA) training to high schoolers who are members of the Taylor or Northwest Cary YMCAs, high school-aged staff members of the Taylor or Northwest Cary YMCAs or in the Taylor and Northwest Cary Leaders Club programs.

tMHFA is an evidence-based training through the National Council for Mental Wellbeing that teaches teens the confidence they need to start difficult conversations about mental health and substance use. In this multi-session training, teens learn how to help each other through hard times. Topics include anxiety, depression, eating disorders, bullying, social media, substance use and ADHD.

The training teaches teens to:

  • Recognize signs and symptoms of mental health and substance use challenges.
  • Understand the impact of violence and bullying on mental health.
  • Use the MHFA Action Plan.
  • Connect a peer with a parent, guardian or trusted adult.
  • Address stigma and explain that recovery is possible.
  • Practice self-care and give tips to their friends.
