September Fostering Connections
Earlier this summer, I spent two days in Chicago with the YMCA of the USA's Champions for Child Protection Committee, a group dedicated to ensuring that every child in our programs is safe from all forms of abuse.
We know that child protection is one of the most important responsibilities we have as a YMCA. Unfortunately, we have all heard stories of organizations where children were not adequately protected.
YMCAs across the country take this responsibility seriously. In fact, we are so committed to child safety that every YMCA is required to earn child protection accreditation through Praesidium, a consulting organization that specializes in helping organizations create and maintain the highest standards of child safety.
The accreditation process is rigorous, requiring organizations to evaluate and strengthen policies, training, hiring practices, supervision standards and reporting procedures to ensure the highest level of child safety.
Our YMCA is currently in the implementation phase of this journey preparing for a site visit this fall. While there is still work ahead, the process has already strengthened our systems and reinforced our commitment to protecting every child entrusted to our care.
My time in Chicago was a powerful reminder that child protection is not a one-time initiative or a box to check. It is an ongoing commitment that requires the engagement of staff, volunteers, leadership and families alike. By creating physically and emotionally safe spaces, we help young people develop the confidence and resilience they need to reach their full potential.
We will continue to lean into this effort, striving every day to provide safe, supportive and nurturing experiences for every child who walks through our doors.
