For nearly three decades, the Downtown Durham YMCA has played a central role in the Bull City’s revitalization, serving upwards of 16,000 children, teens and adults annually. As Durham continues to grow, the Y must grow with it. Coming in 2029, a new location on the American Tobacco Campus.

The Need

The current Downtown Durham YMCA facility, built in 1996, faces significant limitations. Aging infrastructure, constrained parking and outdated program spaces restrict its ability to fully serve the community and meet growing demand.

A new, full-service YMCA will address these challenges and expand access to essential health, wellness and youth development programs in a community that has long been medically underserved.

The Vision

Expected to open in early 2029, the new 65,000-square-foot Downtown Durham YMCA at the American Tobacco Campus will provide modern spaces designed to support community well-being. 

Planned features include an aquatics center, indoor track, dedicated youth and teen spaces, health and wellness programs and clinical space for community health services.

Project Updates

In September 2025, the Y purchased the 0.79‑acre Blackwell and West Pettigrew property from CBC Real Estate, officially launching the long‑planned project.

Design Team Announced for New Downtown Durham Y

Jan. 29, 2026: The YMCA of the Triangle has selected Little Diversified Architectural Consulting as the architect and Thomas & Hutton as the civil engineer for the new Downtown Durham YMCA, marking a significant milestone in the development of this transformative project.

Design Team Details

The new Downtown Durham YMCA will address critical community health needs by incorporating:

  • Dedicated Clinical Space: To fill gaps in this Federally Designated Medically Underserved Area.
  • Comprehensive Health & Wellness Programs: Offer evidence-based programs such as Diabetes Prevention (6% average weight loss) and Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring (75% improved readings), plus initiatives supporting cancer survivors, balance, weight loss and youth health. Physicians can refer patients and receive outcome reports.
  • State-of-the-Art Facilities & Spaces: A 65,000‑square‑foot facility featuring an aquatics center, indoor track, youth spaces and rooms for health programs, with the capacity to serve 47,491 households (117,573 people) within 10 minutes.
  • Access for All: About 26% of members and 32% of youth receive financial assistance, ensuring access for individuals in economically under-resourced communities.

  • Economic and Community Impact: Employs more than 350 staff and provides leadership and job opportunities for youth and adults. Construction will generate approximately 800 jobs, with a commitment of at least 30% participation by minority- and women-owned businesses.
