Community leaders, Downtown Raleigh Alliance members, volunteers and YMCA staff celebrated the Y’s return to downtown Raleigh with a ribbon cutting today.
The Poyner YMCA at 227 Fayetteville Street opened June 20. In November 2017, the unique wellness center was named in honor of James M. Poyner’s service to the YMCA and commitment to the community.
BACK FOR GOOD
“It’s been almost 50 years since the YMCA moved our founding branch from Edenton Street to Hillsborough Street – where it remains today, as the Alexander Family YMCA,” said Matt Lilley, Poyner YMCA Branch Director. “Thanks to the vision of community leaders and the generous support of the Poyner Family, we celebrate a renewed commitment to the downtown community and the possibilities ahead.”
A WELLNESS HUB IN THE HEART OF THE CITY
“The Poyner Y will serve as our primary health and wellness hub where pilot programs will be developed and launched at other branches,” said Doug McMillan, YMCA of the Triangle CEO.“ Downtown Raleigh is the place to be. Innovative businesses, commercial spaces and a variety of cultural experiences are choosing the heart of Downtown Raleigh as their home. The YMCA wants to be a part of this moment as well.”
THE POWER OF US
“While we mark the opening of this newest facility, we are really celebrating the life-changing impact of the YMCA throughout our region,” said Peter Williams, Chief Volunteer Officer. “That is the power of possibility and the power of us – working together toward a common goal.”
