The Produce Box delivers affordable, farm-fresh produce boxes to its members' doors. As part of their community outreach, The Produce Box has provided Camp High Hope families with more than $100,000 in produce box bundles over the last seven years.
Camp High Hopes is a Summer Day Camp program offered to children in our community who may already be served through one of our high needs programs. Camp High Hopes is a fully subsidized day camp. Participants pay little or no cost for the summer. The program is supported by donations to the YMCA of the Triangle’s Annual Campaign.
“We are so excited about being a part of the Camp High Hopes program with the YMCA,” said Courtney Tellefsen, founder of The Produce Box. “Getting healthy fruits and vegetables into the hands of these kids and families who need it most is the most impactful thing we can do for health and wellbeing. Our mission is not just to ‘eat good’ but to also ‘do good’ and we hope this is just the start of us reaching out to the same families the Y touches to help better the lives of others.”
Many campers at Camp High Hopes live in low-income areas with extremely low access to fresh, healthy and affordable food. And, according to a federal government study, less than one-third of all U.S. children eat the recommended amount of fruits and vegetables each day. The issue of children not getting sufficient daily nutrition is a serious issue across the country, but magnified in areas where access to healthy options is low or nonexistent.
Camp High Hopes provides two hot meals to campers five days a week, but with The Produce Box’s contributions, campers are able to share fresh food with their families.
“Through partnerships like this, we are able to help campers and their families see the value of solid nutrition and fresh foods,” said Susan Pettengill, VP of Healthy Living at the YMCA. “This is what we’re all about at the Y – helping the kids and families we serve grow and live healthier lives.”
*The $20 membership fee will be applied to the 11th box. Offer ends July 18.
