Teens Explore College and Career

It’s an amazing feeling to have one foot planted where you are and be able to literally see where you came from.

When Mary Hinton looked out the second-floor window of the William Peace University library, she could see where she grew up 30 years ago – the former Halifax Court public housing.

“It’s just surreal,” she said laughing. “I mean I grew up right over there.”

Today Mary is the owner of Sweetheart Treats, a bakery located in North Raleigh off Durant Road. She learned to swim at the YMCA, went to camp at the YMCA and spent a few summers at YMCA overnight camps as well.

“The YMCA was so influential when I was growing up,” she said. “Everyone went to the YMCA for swimming. And you learned to swim because no one wanted to be seen with a white band.”

Mary was back at Peace University for the YMCA’s annual Lightner Y Achievers College and Career Day.  More than 250 Campers in Leadership Training (CILTs) explored their futures at the 2018 Lightner Y Achievers College and Career Day July 19 at William Peace University.

The annual event gave students the chance to meet with representatives from nine colleges and universities, as well as professionals representing ten different careers including military, police and nonprofits. Teens attended college and career readiness workshops that covered topics like financial aid, fit and healthy lifestyles, overcoming obstacles and preparing for life after high school.

Mary was eager to share her story and success with the kids who stopped by her table. She graduated from North Carolina Central University with a degree in accounting and then received her masters in business finance.

Before the CILTs met Mary though, they heard from three current college students and recent graduates who spoke on a panel about college life.

They advised the CILTs to inquire about college culture, majors, and strengths and weaknesses of each school.

“It’s smart to do something you’ll love,” said Wes Jones a recent graduate of Wake Technical Community College and Strayer University.
