Job Description


POSITION SUMMARY: 

Under the supervision of the Facilities Director, the Custodian supports the cleanliness, safety, and overall readiness of the YMCA facility and surrounding grounds. This position ensures that all interior spaces—including restrooms, locker rooms, offices, hallways, fitness areas, and program spaces—are clean, orderly, and well-maintained. Responsibilities also extend to exterior areas such as sidewalks, natural common areas, parking lots, day camp grounds, sports fields, and shelters. The Custodian works collaboratively with YMCA staff and contracted service providers to maintain high standards of facility presentation and safety. All duties are carried out in alignment with the mission, goals, and policies established by YMCA leadership, governing committees, and the Board of Directors. 


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
 

Facility Cleaning & Upkeep 

  • Ensures the YMCA is clean, attractive, and well-maintained by completing all tasks assigned on the daily cleaning schedule. 
  • Performs routine cleaning duties such as wet and dry mopping, dusting, trash removal, recycling, window washing, vacuuming, and general surface cleaning. 
  • Maintains restrooms, locker rooms, fitness areas, offices, hallways, and other program spaces to YMCA standards. 
  • Supports seasonal cleaning and outdoor tasks, including lawn care, snow removal, and upkeep of sidewalks, parking lots, sports fields, shelters, and natural areas. 
  • Replaces soap, paper towels, and other consumable supplies to ensure facility readiness. 

Basic Maintenance & Safety Support 

  • Records and reports needed repairs and completes minor repairs as directed. 
  • Identifies hazardous conditions and promptly reports them to the supervisor. 
  • Ensures YMCA buildings and property remain secure during assigned shifts. 
  • Operates motorized and non-motorized cleaning and maintenance equipment safely and appropriately. 

Supplies & Work Area Management 

  • Maintains a clean, organized, and safe custodial work area. 
  • Assists with ordering, stocking, and organizing cleaning and facility supplies. 

Teamwork, Communication & Relationship Building 

  • Models strong relationship-building skills in all interactions with members, participants, staff, and leadership. 
  • Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within areas of responsibility. 
  • Supports positive working relationships with YMCA staff and contracted service providers. 

Flexibility & Event Support 

  • May assist with setting up furniture and equipment for meetings, programs, and events. 
  • Works nights and weekends as needed to ensure adequate coverage and support for all shifts. 

 Additional Responsibilities 

  • Completion of all required annual trainings related to safety, compliance, and child protection as assigned.

  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor. 

 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • High School Diploma or GED and 6 months of related experience preferred.  
  • Passion for building community and fostering meaningful relationships through programs and services. 
  • Experience supporting program delivery and staff development in a team-based environment. 
  • Ability to coordinate staff, programs, and schedules effectively in a dynamic setting. 
  • Strong communication skills, including written, verbal, and public-facing interactions. 
  • Demonstrates initiative, sound judgment, and strong organizational and time-management skills. 
  • Builds inclusive, mission-driven relationships with youth, families, and community members from diverse backgrounds. 
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills preferred, but not required. 
     

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS: 

The physical demands described here represent those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. 

  • Primarily office and program settings with frequent interaction in gyms, classrooms, and outdoor spaces. 
  • Moderate noise levels; may be louder during youth or community activities. 
  • Sufficient physical strength and agility to carry out essential duties. 
  • Ability to erect and stand on ladders and platforms at heights up to 30 feet. 
  • Ability to work with paint, cleaning equipment, chemical compounds, solvents, cleaners, and solutions in dry, liquid, powder, spray, and aerosol forms. 
  • Ability to paint, clean equipment, and operate motorized equipment as needed. 
  • Ability to work in conditions that will create dirt and dust. 
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching; occasional lifting or moving up to 40 lbs. 
  • Some work performed outdoors in varying weather conditions. 
  • Flexible schedule required — may include early mornings, evenings, weekends. 
  • Must be able to provide valid identification for employment eligibility verification.  
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have access to reliable transportation.  
  • A clean driving record is required to meet YMCA insurance standards.  
  • Travel between branch and/or site locations, and to off-site meetings and events may be required.
  • Must reside in the YMCA of the Triangle service area (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill and surrounding areas).
