SAS Championship Helps Kids Succeed

Each October we look forward to golfing for good at the SAS Championship at Prestonwood Country Club. Thanks to proceeds from the tournament, children are given an opportunity to achieve through Y Learning, the YMCA of the Triangle’s standardized after school tutorial program.

THE SAS CHAMPIONSHIP

“The SAS Championship continues to be the largest single donation to Y Learning. We are so grateful for the support of SAS and the SAS Championship for helping us bridge the education gap,” said Bruce Ham, Chief Development Officer for the YMCA of the Triangle.

As part of this year’s event, Y Learning students enjoyed the chance to connect their work in the classroom with potential careers thanks to a behind-the-scenes tour at the country club of the broadcast and hospitality industry.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for the students to connect their Y Learning curriculum with the SAS Championship,” Ham said.

Y LEARNING = A CHANCE TO ACHIEVE

Students participate in the Y Learning Program at no cost, thanks to community support and donations to the YMCA’s Annual Campaign. More than 1,100 students in Wake, Chatham, Durham, Johnston, Lee, Orange and Pamlico Counties participate in Y Learning. The cost for one child to participate in Y Learning is $1,647 per year. Since the SAS Championship began supporting the YMCA of the Triangle’s academic programs, more than 6,000 students have taken part in the programs.

“Our event may only be seven days on the calendar, but the impact it creates within our community is felt 52 weeks a year,” said Jeff Kleiber, Tournament Director of the SAS Championship. “The YMCA of the Triangle and its programs, especially Y Learning, provide vital resources to young students that need our assistance. We are proud to partner with the YMCA of the Triangle and support their efforts in developing solid foundations for future generations.”

Since 2010, proceeds from the SAS Championship have benefited Y Learning. In fact, nearly 20 percent of the students in the program are able to participate due to the SAS Championship donation.

YMCA ANNUAL CAMPAIGN

For 27 years, the YMCA's Annual We Build People Campaign has provided opportunities for children, families and adults to participate in YMCA programs regardless of their ability to pay. 100% of donations help our neighbors.
