POSITION SUMMARY:
 

Under the supervision of senior aquatics leadership, the YOTA Swim Team Director provides vision, leadership, and operational oversight for a competitive, mission-driven YMCA swim program. This position is responsible for coaching assigned training groups, supporting program development, supervising part-time coaching staff, and ensuring a high-quality experience for athletes and families. The Swim Team Director collaborates closely with aquatics and competitive swimming leadership to implement program goals, manage team operations, and uphold YMCA standards of safety, communication, and youth development. All responsibilities are carried out in alignment with the mission, values, and policies of the YMCA.

 

This position is based out of the Taylor Family YMCA.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
 

Program Leadership & Vision 

  • Provides vision, leadership, and day-to-day management for a values-driven competitive swim program supporting National Team operations across multiple sites. 
  • Collaborates with senior competitive swimming leadership to establish annual program goals and leads staff in achieving these objectives. 
  • Plans, prepares, and conducts National Team practices aligned with program objectives, training standards, and athlete development pathways. 
  • Supports the development of a successful seasonal meet schedule in partnership with senior leadership. 

 

Staff Leadership & Volunteer Engagement 

  • Recruits and hires diverse staff and volunteer teams across multiple dimensions of diversity. 
  • Provides leadership, coaching, and mentorship to part-time National Team staff to ensure a high-quality, athlete-centered program. 
  • Serves as the primary manager of an assigned site, building strong relationships with aquatics and operations staff to ensure smooth facility coordination. 
  • Assists in recruiting and training volunteers to support team operations and meet management. 


Communication & Relationship Building
 

  • Models strong relationship-building skills in all interactions with athletes, parents, staff, volunteers, and community partners. 
  • Leads the implementation of open, clear, and consistent communication with National Team athletes, families, and YMCA aquatics staff. 
  • Works closely with senior athletes, parents, and the National Team Head Coach to develop individualized athlete development plans, including guidance for those pursuing collegiate swimming opportunities. 
  • Serves as an ambassador for YMCA aquatics and wellness programs within the community. 


Program Administration & Meet Management
 

  • Prepares and submits required information for swim meets and attends meets as assigned. 
  • Maintains accurate attendance records, skill assessments, and training plans for National Team athletes. 
  • Supports the development and execution of a competitive meet schedule each season. 
  • Assists with budget monitoring and adheres to YMCA financial guidelines and budget philosophy. 
  • Abides by YMCA, ASCA, and USA Swimming Codes of Ethics and ensures program compliance with all governing standards. 


Organizational Support & Volunteer Coordination 

  • Assists in recruiting and training volunteers to support team operations and meet management. 
  • Supports Annual Campaign efforts by recruiting volunteers and coordinating team-related activities.  


Additional Responsibilities
 

  • Abides by YMCA, ASCA, and USA Swimming Codes of Ethics. 
  • Completion of all required annual trainings related to safety, compliance, and child protection as assigned. 
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the supervisor. 


QUALIFICATIONS:
 

  • Degree in related field preferred and 1+ year of related experience. 
  • ASCA level 3 swimming coach certifications preferred. 
  • Passion for building community and fostering meaningful relationships through programs and services. 
  • Experience supporting program delivery and staff development in a team-based environment. 
  • Ability to coordinate staff, programs, and schedules effectively in a dynamic setting. 
  • Strong communication skills, including written, verbal, and public-facing interactions. 
  • Demonstrates initiative, sound judgment, and strong organizational and time-management skills. 
  • Builds inclusive, mission-driven relationships with youth, families, and community members from diverse backgrounds. 
  • Maintain necessary certifications including CPR, First Aid, Coaches Safety Training and Lifeguard training.   
  • Bilingual or multilingual skills preferred, but not required.

  • Primarily office and program settings with frequent interaction in gyms, classrooms, and outdoor spaces 
  • Moderate noise levels; may be louder during youth or community activities 
  • Regular use of computer, phone, and other office technology 
  • Frequent standing, walking, bending, and reaching; occasional lifting or moving up to 40 lbs 
  • Some work performed outdoors in varying weather conditions 
  • Flexible schedule required — may include early mornings, evenings, weekends, and occasional travel between branches or sites 
  • Must be able to provide valid identification for employment eligibility verification.  
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license and have access to reliable transportation.  
  • A clean driving record is required to meet YMCA insurance standards.  
  • Travel between branch and/or site locations, and to off-site meetings and events is required. 
  • Must reside in the YMCA of the Triangle service area (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill and surrounding areas).
