POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Healthy Living or Sr. Healthy Living Director, the Personal Trainer is responsible for designing customized fitness programs, providing one-on-one training sessions, and motivating clients to achieve their personal health and fitness goals. They will play a key role in improving the well-being of individuals by helping them enhance their physical strength, endurance, flexibility, and overall fitness levels in a safe and supportive environment. The safety, supervision and wellness support for the one-on-one training of clients and small group classes.
They are responsible for managing these functions in accordance with the stated mission, goals, and policies established by the administrative staff, governing committees, and Board of Directors of the YMCA.
Job Schedule:
Monday - Friday
6 - 9 a.m., 11 a.m. - 4 p.m., 5 - 8 p.m. (flexible hours/days)
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Maintain and update personal availability in Personal Training Management Software as instructed by direct supervisor.
- Conduct initial fitness assessments for all clients. Health history, fitness assessment results, and personal goals must be tracked in Personal Training Management Software.
- Develop personalized workout plans tailored to each client's needs, goals, and abilities, ensuring a balanced approach to strength, cardiovascular, flexibility, and mobility training.
- Lead effective, safe, and motivating individual training sessions, focusing on proper exercise technique, progression, and client engagement.
- Track and record clients' progress, adjusting programs as needed to help them achieve continued results and overcome challenges.
- Provide basic nutritional advice and support, along with lifestyle recommendations to complement training programs and maximize results.
- Actively motivate clients, fostering a positive and encouraging environment that inspires commitment and progress.
- Stay up to date with the latest fitness trends, techniques, and industry best practices through continuous professional development and certification renewals.
- Maintain a safe and clean workout environment, ensuring all equipment is in proper working order and clients are performing exercises with correct form to prevent injuries.
- Keep accurate records of client sessions, payments, progress notes, and any necessary documentation related to training programs.
- Communicate and follow-up with members enrolled in the Personal Training program within 24 hours of request to book.
- Ensure health screening, informed consent and medical clearance forms are stored in a secure location following HIPPAA policies.
- Attend all staff meetings and trainings required by Direct Supervisor.
- Must conduct an average of 4 sessions including; Personal Training, Personal Training Consultations, and Evolt Consultations per week over the previous 60 days to remain on payroll.
- Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within area of responsibility.
- When approved, create and send digital workouts in the Personal Training Management Software platform tailored to your client’s assessments and goals.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must hold a current certification in Personal Training by a recognized NCCA accredited organization.
- Maintain a positive attitude and build relationships with members and staff.
- Must obtain certifications through the YMCA in American Red Cross CPR for the Professional Rescuer, First Aid, and Administering Emergency Oxygen (or equivalent) upon hire, as well as completing other required trainings as assigned.
- Must complete assigned YMCA of the Triangle Personal Training Academy workshops within first 90 days of hire.
- Must have flexible hours to include early mornings, evenings, and weekends.
- Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
- Multi-lingual desired but not required.

- Primarily fitness floor and group exercise studio environments with occasional office work.
- Moderate noise levels; may be louder during classes or events.
- Regular use of computers, tablets, kiosks, and audio/visual equipment.
- Frequent standing, walking, bending, reaching, and equipment adjustments.
- Occasional lifting or moving equipment up to 40 lbs.
- Flexible schedule required — may include early mornings, evenings, and weekends depending on program needs.
