The Chatham Park YMCA officially opens its doors this weekend, marking an exciting milestone in Pittsboro and Chatham County. On March 12, local officials, community leaders, and representatives from Preston Development Company and Chatham Park joined YMCA staff and volunteers to celebrate with the ceremonial ribbon cutting.
A Community-Centered Vision Realized
“We are celebrating community - not just a building. This opening is a testament to vision and collaboration,” said Bruce Ham, CEO of the YMCA of the Triangle.
The Y has served Chatham County since 2014 through camps, after-school programs and sports. A decade ago, an adult fitness facility opened in Pittsboro, reinforcing the Y’s positive impact. However, a larger facility was needed to serve all ages.
“Our volunteers push us to think bigger,” Ham said. “For decades, Tim Smith and Bubba Rawl of Preston Development Company have been incredible supporters. Their vision and record-breaking donation ensured the Y’s success here.”
A State-of-the-Art Facility
The 36,000-square-foot Chatham Park YMCA is now home to nearly 3,000 members. It offers:
- A modern wellness center and group exercise studios.
- Indoor and open-air courts for basketball, pickleball, and fitness classes.
- Two outdoor pools, including one with a water slide.
- Outdoor spaces for youth and family activities.
- Multi-purpose space for wellness programs.
Commitment to Health and Community
The YMCA of the Triangle provides Chatham County and the entire region with evidence-based health programs, coaching and wellness services through Y Health programs. Between 2019 and 2024, thousands participated in programs like LIVESTRONG at the YMCA for cancer survivors, the Diabetes Prevention Program, Weight Loss Program, Healthy Weight and Your Child, Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring and Moving for Better Balance—all contributing to improved community health outcomes.
Beyond fitness, the YMCA provides academic support, after-school care, sports and camps. Teens develop leadership skills, while families engage in healthy activities together.
“This is our fourth partnership with the Y, and the community benefits more each time,” said Smith and Rawl. “The Y is a focal point within Chatham Park and a valued amenity. While we develop communities, we also want to create strong connections. Our investment is a way to give back and build something for everyone to enjoy.”
A Collaboration in Design and Construction
The Chatham Park YMCA was designed by LS3P and Andre Johnson Architect, with construction managed by Whiting-Turner Contracting Company.
The grand opening on March 15 will follow the annual Leprechaun Dash, 5K and 10K runs supporting youth initiatives in Chatham County. Now open to the public, the Chatham Park YMCA is ready to serve as a welcoming space for health, wellness and community engagement.
