Stronger Together
June Y Spotlight of the month: Dewayne and Gary.
What could be just another day in the workweek has become a highlight of fun, exercise and camaraderie for a group at the Ingram Family Y. Dewayne and Gary join a group of Y friends three days each week to play water basketball. While they started out looking for ways to get active, they have found so much more than just a fitness program.
"I really enjoy coming to the Y. I have been a member since 2013. For almost a year now, a group of us get together every Monday, Wednesday and Friday to play basketball in the pool. It's a sight to see: grown men wrestling over a basketball to see who can score 21 points first. It can get pretty intense at times, but boy do we have fun", says Gary.
We asked Dewayne about his Y Community and he told us that it's the people that make the difference. He says that the Y "promotes professionalism with a caring spirit, knows the benefits of respecting others and provides a platform for members to maximize their mental and physical strength."
The YMCA of the Triangle thrives on members like Gary and Dewayne who take everyday wellness programs and choose to make them more. Their basketball group has become a place to build stronger relationships in a diverse community, growing both individually and as part of a team working toward health goals. Dewayne and Gary's group has tapped into the power of a much larger truth: that our community is stronger together
"I would encourage all those who are not a part of the Y to definitely join. You will be challenged, encouraged and rewarded. I have learned over the years that working out is not just something to do, it has to become a lifestyle. What better place to do that than the Y."
