We love our group fitness instructors for the huge impact they have on our YMCA family! Not only do they facilitate great workouts, but they are so critical to the relationship-building that makes this a special community.
Laurie Register is an invaluable member of our team in Durham, and she leads a variety of classes across our Durham locations. If you haven't joined her for a class yet, you should definitely make it a priority!
We appreciate Laurie taking some time to share her background and her motivations for bringing her uplifting energy to the Y:
"After 17 years of moving around the world as an Air Force spouse, I’m so excited to be settled now in Durham with my husband (now retired from the military), two daughters, dog, and extended family that lives nearby.
"My desire to be a Group Fitness Instructor began during the five and a half years we were stationed in Okinawa, Japan. I would invite other military spouses over each week and hold informal workouts at my house. After doing this for well over two years, I knew that I wanted to pursue the fitness teaching path when we moved back Stateside. At our next and final duty station, Langley AFB in Virginia, I got my certification and began my Group Fitness Instructor journey in March 2020 with one of the local YMCAs. I fell in love with the organization and all of the people involved with it immediately. I knew I wanted to remain a part of the YMCA when I moved to Durham.
"I joined the YMCA of the Triangle in 2021 and I’m so grateful to have the opportunity to continue contributing to this wonderful organization. I look forward to every class and to getting to know the amazing members that attend. I’ve met so many kind and caring people at the YMCA. They share with me stories about their lives, pictures from their vacations, food from their gardens, and it genuinely feels like we are all part of one big family. They bring so much joy and fulfillment to me!
"I love Jesus, and I’m thankful each day for the blessings in my life. In my free time I enjoy exercising, reading, working puzzles and spending time with family and friends. During college football season, I really enjoy watching my alma mater, Clemson, play. Go Tigers! Also, because I married a Duke graduate, I adore college basketball season. Go Blue Devils!
"I’m currently teaching Core and Cardio Strength classes at Hope Valley Farms; Kickboxing at Lakewood, American Tobacco and Hope Valley Farms; and Upper Body/Lower Body/Core Blast classes at American Tobacco.
"I’m so thankful to be part of the YMCA!"
