The YMCA of the Triangle currently offers three college scholarships for teenagers who participate in YMCA teen programs. William Peace University offers a scholarship for YMCA staff.
Each scholarship below has different qualifications and requirements.
Hannah Viall Memorial Scholarship
Started by Dean and Erika Viall in memory of their daughter, Hannah, this $3,000 scholarship goes to a senior Leaders Club student who embodies Hannah’s lifestyle of L.I.V.E.: Loving, Including, and Valuing Everyone. All Leaders Club seniors who plan to attend college (2- or 4-year) in 2024-25 are eligible. Community service hours and commitment to Leaders Club will be considered. Students apply for this scholarship themselves. The application deadline is March 30, 2024. Presented at Leaders Club banquet(s) in April/May.
The Peters Family Scholarship
Created by former YMCA of the Triangle executive Betsy Peters in memory of her parents. Two $1,500 scholarships will be given to high school seniors heading a 2- or 4-year college in 2024-25. Nominees should have worked in Y youth programs for at least 9 months cumulatively (summer=3 months); they must show strong leadership qualities including honesty, dependability, relationship building, innovation, decisiveness and communication skills. YMCA staff submit their nominees electronically. Submission deadline Sunday, July 7, 2024.
Jo Anna McMillan Tradition of Excellence Award
Given to an exemplary counselor at Finley Day Camp in memory of FDC founder Jo Anna McMillan. Finley YMCA full-time staff choose a rising college freshman who embodies Jo Anna’s commitment to excellence, quality, and relationships for this $2,400 award. The scholarship is presented at the Finley Day Camp Banquet in July 2024.
William Peace University
Current YMCA staff qualify for a $2,000 renewable scholarship for a total of $8,000 over the course of their studies here. When completing your application, indicate your YMCA work experience with dates in the Activities Section.
