Moving for Better Balance FAQs
A leading cause of hospitalization and secondary health illness is a fall. As we age, the risk of falling increases. A bad fall can lead to secondary health issues or cause us to spend time in physical therapy or, worse, in the hospital.
The YMCA's Moving for Better Balance program can help you learn core movements and training for balance and daily functions. Functional training relies on movements common in everyday life, such as getting up from a chair, climbing stairs, and walking unassisted. By working on these common movements, the program can help increase balance and confidence.
Moving for Better Balance classes are based on Tai Chi, the ancient Chinese practice of mindful, fluid movements and breath. With each movement comes purpose and intentionality. The YMCA incorporates some of these movements in our classes to help with balance and alignment.
Some health insurance organizations may cover all or part of the Y Health Moving for Better Balance program.
