Heart to Heart

It’s time to have a heart to heart.

Heart disease claims the lives of more than 2,200 Americans each day. It ranks as the number one killer of American women.

That’s the bad news. Here’s the good news. According to the American Heart Association, you can improve your heart health with simple steps that include moderate exercise and healthier eating.

Join the YMCA of the Triangle as we celebrate American Heart Month with some events and ideas that can help you have better health.

GET SMART, STAY FIT.

Our free Get Smart, Stay Fit program offers one-on-one time with our personal trainers twice a month. Our trainers meet with you and get a baseline established - they'll measure your body fat and spend some time talking about how to use the information to improve your workout returns.

"The measurements really help establish a realistic baseline," says a personal trainer. "I like incorporating them into an exercise plan because it's a great, accurate way to guage progress other than just the number on the scale, especially if building lean muscle mass is the end goal. By combining body fat measurements and overall weight, you get a clearer picture of progress, and that's always a good thing."

This free program for Y members is offered at Alexander Family YMCA three times a month:

  • First Friday of every month from 12 – 1:30p.m.
  • Second Wednesday of every month from 5:45 – 7:15a.m.
  • Third Monday of every month from 5 – 6:30p.m.

STAY HEALTHY, BE SAFE

Stop by during a workout break or your lunch hour from 12 to 1 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 18 at A. E. Finley YMCA for healthy snacks and a short presentation on these topics:

  • How to improve your balance and prevent falls
  • Guarding against rotator cuff/shoulder injuries
  • Combining exercise and osteoarthritis
