A Multi-Generational Legacy
Tim Hunter grew up going to the YMCA with his family in Winston-Salem, where his father Gary, a former college basketball player, made sure that sports and community were central to their lives. The Y was more than a gym for the Hunter Family. It was a place of belonging, service and connection. His father served on the local Y board and as a church deacon, modeling a lifelong commitment to community.
After moving to Wake County in 1992, the YMCA continued to be a family anchor. As a teenager, Tim played countless hours of pickup basketball at the Cary and Alexander Ys, and his dad often joined in. When Tim returned to Raleigh after a stint in D.C. in 2012, he rejoined the Y and became deeply involved through Togetherhood, advisory board leadership, and family programs like Y Guides, camps, and youth basketball with his daughter.
When his parents passed away, Tim wanted their legacy of service to endure. Creating an endowment in their memory was a natural way to honor their values and ensure that spirit of community continues for future generations, including Tim's own daughter.
The Gary and Susan Hunter Family Endowment stands as a lasting tribute to their legacy of service, carried forward by Tim and his family.
