Youth & Government Conference is Back in Raleigh

It’s officially Youth & Government month and the countdown is on. This year will be the first in-person conference for many participants.

As a veteran of the program, Governor Noah Weyne is looking forward to reuniting with YAG friends in downtown Raleigh this year.

“I am most excited to see everyone in person again,” Weyne said. “YAG is truly about friendships and I cannot wait to see everyone make friends that will last lifetimes.”

Each year the YMCA of the Triangle hosts the state legislature conference in Raleigh. This three-day conference is a culmination of months of hard work, bill writing and learning from Youth and Government delegations around North Carolina. For the last three years, the conference has been virtual so for some attendees this is their first in-person conference.

More than 800 high school students will be in downtown Raleigh as they debate bills, engage in partisanship and practice leadership skills that will serve them for years.

"We are really looking forward to this year's event," said Amber McClure, Director of Teen Civic Engagement. "It's going to be a great conference and our participants will learn about how government functions and laws are decided."

The Youth and Government program and conference is all about speaking up and taking risks say the students.

“My biggest piece of advice to give to someone new to YAG is to take risks,” Speaker of the House, Springer Hiatt said. “Speaking when you’re scared to can actually be one of the best decisions you make. Be confident and don’t hold back.”
